The 2020 exhaust is growing, measuring 180.5 inches in total length. This positions it right in the middle of its competition in terms of total size, but the Escape has some tricks to maximize the interior space.
Its second row of sliding seats elevates the leg space to the staggering 40.7 inches when it moves backwards. This allows the Escape to claim the best leg space in the second row of its class for non-hybrid models, with only the Honda CR-V to spit. The load capacity is a solid 37.5 cubic feet for non-hybrid exhausts (34.4 cubic feet in hybrid models). With the second row folded, Ford says the maximum capacity increases to 65.4 cubic feet. None of the load figures is the best of its kind, but it places the Escape among the leaders in this fight. Ford loses a bit here due to the style of the back more rounded compared to the square CR-V and the Forester.
Ford offers the 2020 Escape with four powertrain options. The base engine is a 1.5-liter turbo three-cylinder engine that generates 180 horsepower and 177 lb/ft of torque. Yes, just three cylinders, and for the first time in a Ford engine, there is deactivation of the cylinder, so it can actually function as a two cylinders. It can also upgrade to a four-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbo that increases the maximum output to 250 horsepower and 275 lb/ft of torque with a 93 octane fuel, providing a time of 0 to 60 mph of 7.4 seconds.
Then there are the two hybrid thrusters that use a four-cylinder 2.5 liters that run on the most efficient Atkinson cycle to supplement the electrical energy. The 2020 normal Ford exhaust Hybrid produces 198 horsepower and 153 lb/ft of torque, while the Plug-In exhaust increases to 209 horsepower and the same amount of torque. Ford claims that the escape complement will travel 30 miles with a full charge, but EPA’s estimated range is not yet available. The fuel saving figures for the new Escape are not available at this time either.
